Job Title: Grants Officer
Organisation: Afya na Haki (Ahaki) Institute
Afya na Haki (Ahaki) Institute is recruiting an experienced and detail-oriented Grants Officer to strengthen its institutional funding and donor engagement function. This role is central to ensuring that all grants are managed with the highest standards of compliance, accountability, and quality, while supporting the successful delivery of Ahaki’s programmes.
The successful candidate will provide strategic oversight across the entire grants lifecycle, support donor relations, and contribute to proposal development, reporting, and organisational planning in line with both donor and Ahaki requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Grants Management
- Oversee the full grants lifecycle from pre-award to close-out.
- Ensure effective grant start-up, implementation tracking, and close-out processes.
Proposal Development
- Support the development, review, and submission of high-quality funding proposals and concept notes.
- Coordinate inputs from programme, finance, and leadership teams.
Donor Reporting & Stewardship
- Lead the preparation and submission of timely, accurate donor reports.
- Maintain strong relationships with donors and funding partners.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with donor regulations, contractual obligations, and internal policies.
- Identify and mitigate grant-related risks.
Internal Coordination & Systems Strengthening
- Strengthen internal grants management systems and workflows.
- Promote best practices in documentation, reporting, and data management.
Organisational Strategy & Forecasting
- Support funding pipeline tracking, grants forecasting, and strategic planning.
- Contribute to institutional sustainability initiatives.
Supervision & Mentorship
- Supervise and mentor junior staff involved in grants and partnerships.
- Build internal capacity across teams on grants management requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies, International Relations, Public Administration, Public Health, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Additional training in grants management, donor compliance, or partnerships is desirable.
- 5–7 years’ experience in grants coordination, donor relations, or programme development within a CSO, university, or think tank.
- Demonstrated experience managing multi-donor or consortium grants (e.g. EU, UN agencies, Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust).
- Strong understanding of the full grants cycle.
- Proven experience with donor compliance frameworks, reporting systems, and budget monitoring tools.
- Excellent writing and editing skills for proposals, donor reports, and briefs.
- Experience supervising staff and working with cross-functional teams.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
