Up to $100,000 for African AI Startups: MEST Opens 2027 Applications

Africa’s AI ecosystem continues to punch below its weight – not because of a lack of talent, but because of limited access to capital.

In 2025, African AI startups attracted only 1–1.5% of global AI investment, despite artificial intelligence accounting for nearly half of all venture capital funding worldwide. The gap is even more striking at the early stage. During the second quarter of 2025, AI startups across Africa raised just $14 million, compared to $47.3 billion invested globally – barely 0.02% of worldwide AI funding.

The challenge isn’t a shortage of brilliant developers or innovative ideas. The real barrier is funding and the opportunities needed to transform technical talent into scalable, investment-ready companies.

Up to $100,000 in Pre-Seed Funding for African AI Startups

The Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), an Accra-based institution that has been training African software entrepreneurs since 2008, has opened applications for its 2027 AI Startup Program.

Selected teams will receive up to $100,000 in pre-seed investment to build and launch AI-driven startups.

  • A bachelor’s degree, diploma, or equivalent hands-on experience

Successful applicants will undergo seven months of full-time residential training in Accra, Ghana, followed by a four-month incubation program for the most promising ventures.

During the program, participants will:

  • Form startup teams
  • Validate an AI business idea
  • Build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
  • Receive mentorship from experts at OpenAI, Perplexity, Google, and MEST
