Ministry of Education Tells Graduates to Become Employers

Education Cabinet Secretary Mr. Julius Ogamba has urged graduates, especially those from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, to focus on creating their own jobs instead of waiting for formal employment.

Mr. Ogamba said the government has invested heavily in infrastructure within the construction and technology sectors to help youths turn their skills into income-generating opportunities.

Speaking during the 20th Graduation Ceremony of Eldoret Polytechnic on Monday, December 1, Ogamba noted that job creation is being accelerated in key areas such as affordable housing, manufacturing, the digital economy, and the creative economy. He emphasized that TVET institutions remain central to producing the skilled manpower required for these projects.

The CS challenged the graduating class of 2025 to step into the workforce as entrepreneurs, innovators, and solution-makers. He encouraged them to use their imagination and drive to create opportunities rather than relying solely on employment. Ogamba also called on vocational training institutions to build stronger partnerships and upgrade training equipment to better prepare students for self-employment.

Ogamba reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to ensure more young people access scholarships and financial aid, especially those pursuing TVET education. He said adequate funding, capitation, and scholarships remain key pillars in guaranteeing equal opportunities for all Kenyan youths.

His remarks come as the government continues rolling out reforms to TVET programs to align them with industry needs. Earlier in the year, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced the introduction of short, industry-focused courses lasting two to three weeks to help young people quickly acquire practical skills needed in both local and international job markets.
