Lilian Nyawanda takes Over KRA Leadership

A leadership shake-up has hit the Kenya Revenue Authority after Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga was replaced, with Lilian Nyawanda stepping in to take charge in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive head.

In a statement released on April 8, 2026, the KRA Board disclosed that Wattanga’s contract would not be extended, effectively ushering in a transition at one of the country’s most critical institutions. The Board acknowledged his contribution during his time in office, particularly highlighting his role in advancing internal restructuring efforts.

“We note the conclusion of Mr Humphrey Wattanga’s service as Commissioner General. We appreciate his leadership and the impact he has had on key reform initiatives within the Authority,” the statement said, while thanking him for his service to both the institution and the country.

Taking over in the interim is Lilian Nyawanda, who has been appointed Acting Commissioner General with immediate effect as the Board begins the process of recruiting a substantive office holder. Nyawanda currently serves as Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, placing her in a strategic position to ensure continuity in operations.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining efficient service delivery and upholding KRA’s mandate during the transition period.

Wattanga assumed office in August 2023 on a three-year contract after a competitive selection process, overseeing key reforms aimed at strengthening revenue collection and institutional efficiency.
