KRA Launches WhatsApp Chatbot to Make Tax Filing Easier for Kenyans

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled a new WhatsApp-based service that allows taxpayers to access key tax services, including filing returns, without visiting KRA offices.

Announcing the service on Thursday, January 22, KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga said the chatbot operates 24/7 and currently provides 15 services, making tax management more accessible and convenient for Kenyans.

To use the service, taxpayers simply save KRA’s official WhatsApp number, +254 711 099 999, and send a message such as “Hi” or “Menu” to start a chat. After verifying their identity, users are presented with a menu of services they can access directly from their phones.

In addition to guiding users on filing tax returns through the iTax portal, the chatbot offers support for PIN management, tax queries, eTIMS invoicing, digital self-service options, and more. Wattanga explained that the bot provides step-by-step instructions and lists all the requirements needed to complete tax filing successfully.

“You can file returns via WhatsApp or the web. Our 24-hour chatbot offers 15 services designed to make tax compliance easier,” he said. Wattanga added that KRA is implementing further technological upgrades that will integrate artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics to strengthen tax management and compliance.

KRA Board Chairperson Ndindi Muriithi highlighted that modernising IT systems is key to improving efficiency, increasing revenue collection, and reducing paper-based processes. He expressed confidence that the authority would meet its 2025/26 revenue target of Ksh 2.968 trillion, a 15.4% increase from the Ksh 2.572 trillion collected in the previous financial year.

The launch follows the recent introduction of a USSD service (*222#) for users with basic mobile phones, offering services like PIN registration, Turnover Tax (TOT), Monthly Rental Income (MRI), eTIMS, payments, tax compliance certificates, and more. KRA said the initiative aims to ensure all taxpayers, regardless of digital skills or internet access, can easily comply with tax requirements.
