Elon Musk Pushes X to Boost Creator Payouts to Challenge YouTube

Elon Musk is stepping up efforts to transform X (formerly Twitter) into a more creator-friendly platform, directing the company to increase payouts for content creators.

This being a business move aimed at competing with mega social platforms like YouTube. The announcement comes after growing feedback from users and creators who feel that X’s monetisation options lag behind those of established video platforms.

Musk’s message was succinct but decisive. In response to a user suggestion advocating for a “much higher” revenue share, Musk replied, “Ok, let’s do it,” while emphasizing the need for safeguards to prevent fraud and abuse.

He also tagged X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, signaling that a revamp of the platform’s creator payment system is imminent.

The planned changes are expected to include a higher share of advertising revenue for creators, as well as stricter measures to prevent fraudulent activity from inflating earnings artificially. According to Bier, new systems could dramatically reduce abuses that have historically limited fair payouts.

Industry observers note that while the move is promising, it will be challenging for X to match YouTube’s established infrastructure and massive audience base. Popular creators have highlighted that revenue alone may not be enough to draw them away from YouTube, which remains the benchmark for online content monetisation.

Musk’s push reflects a broader trend in social media, where platforms are increasingly competing to attract top talent through better financial incentives.

By offering fairer payouts, X aims not only to retain existing creators but also to lure fresh talent, intensifying the rivalry in the creator economy as platforms vie for user attention and content supremacy.
