OpenAI is introducing a teen-specific ChatGPT experience for users aged 13–17, with stronger safety protections, healthy-use features and additional parental controls. Announced on August 18, 2026, the system can automatically place an account in the teen experience if OpenAI estimates the user is under 18 or the user identifies as 13–17.
The biggest changes involve sensitive content. Teen accounts receive additional safeguards around graphic violence, sexual or romantic roleplay, self-harm, dangerous viral challenges, extreme dieting and body-shaming. OpenAI is also adding prompts encouraging users to take breaks during extended sessions. The goal, the company says, is to keep ChatGPT useful for learning and skill-building while adding stronger guardrails.
Parents will have greater control without full access to private chats. OpenAI allows parents to link their accounts to a teen’s account and manage features such as memory and chat history. Parents may also receive narrowly targeted alerts if OpenAI detects signs of acute distress.
The move follows months of preparation. OpenAI began developing age-prediction technology in 2025 and later published its Teen Safety Blueprint and under-18 principles. On January 20, 2026, it began rolling out age prediction using signals such as account and usage patterns.
The launch highlights a broader challenge for the AI industry: how to make AI age-appropriate without compromising privacy. With teenagers already using AI for schoolwork, research and everyday questions, OpenAI is opting for stronger protections rather than simply restricting access. The approach, however, raises questions about age verification, parental oversight and the balance between safety and privacy.
