For those who are employed, don’t hurry to quit your office work just because a friend or a family member told you about the sweet world of business out here.
Business is sweet but not always. It is also sweet but not for everybody. In fact, 90 percent of the businesses you see out here are suffering from inside. Again, 90 percent of of all startups in the market fail within their second year of launch. Things aren’t as rosy as you always read this in textbooks. Separate text books from realities of life. The ground is quite different and sometime tragic!
It can feel good and stylish to own or run your own business, but until you start one is when you realize things aren’t smooth as you were told by your friends. The craze of owning an enterprise has been on the rise in the recent period. Everyone, whether employed or not, wants to own a business, but, guess what? Almost all these people have ended up regretting losing their only savings to wrong and untested choices. That is not saying, never try. In this life we keep trying everything sometimes until something works. But we also have to be cautious. That is the rule of thumb!
My point, if you are in employment, see that as a worthy opportunity. We have individuals who are doing quite well in their respective 9-5 office jobs. Do not be discouraged by some individuals that you are in a wrong career. Employment is real and, even if you start your own company, you will have to employ a worker or workers to assist you in some areas. So, therefore, I see nothing wrong with that career path. You could be employed or you could become an employer. And if you make it to the employer level, you must put up with ‘gruesome’ years of managing employees.
Remember, if you want business, nothing stops you from working for someone and also running a side hustle on the side. You can start a venture while still in employment, until things stabilize, then you can think of quitting forever. Don’t hurry. The situation could be bad but never hurry leaving something which has, at least, been paying your bills every month.
Don’t be those type of people who easily fly with the craze of leaving employment to join business; only to end up regretting days later why they left their Ksh 80,000 salary job. Again remember, a job once lost, is never easy to recover. What’s easier is your immediate replacement.
