The World Trade Organization (WTO) has officially opened applications for its 2026 Young Trade Leaders Programme, a global initiative aimed at empowering young people to actively engage in international trade and deepen their understanding of how trade policies influence economic development worldwide.
Launched in 2024, the programme was designed to bridge the gap between the WTO and younger generations with a strong interest in global trade and economic policy. It brings together a select group of passionate and knowledgeable individuals who are committed to advancing the role of trade in sustainable development. Successful applicants are appointed as Young Trade Leaders for a one-year term, during which they collaborate with the WTO, take part in specialised training, and promote trade awareness within their respective countries.
At its core, the initiative seeks to amplify youth participation in global trade discussions, strengthen public understanding of the WTO’s mission, and build a vibrant international network of young trade advocates. Participants are also encouraged to contribute innovative ideas on how trade can better serve both people and the planet, particularly in addressing emerging global challenges.
The programme is open to students and young professionals aged between 18 and 28 from across the world. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong interest in international trade, a clear grasp of its role in economic growth and sustainability, and a genuine motivation to raise awareness about trade-related issues within their communities.
Those selected will take on the role of ambassadors for trade education and dialogue. They will engage in activities such as promoting awareness of global trade systems, organising or supporting trade-related initiatives locally, and sharing insights on how trade policies can improve economic outcomes. In doing so, they will contribute meaningfully to conversations shaping the future of global trade governance.
While the programme does not offer direct financial compensation, it provides significant professional and personal development opportunities. Participants gain access to WTO-led training courses, mentorship from experts within the WTO Secretariat, and institutional support to organise trade-focused initiatives in their home countries. One of the highlights of the programme is an invitation to Geneva, Switzerland, to attend the WTO Public Forum in September 2026 – a premier global platform that brings together policymakers, academics, and industry leaders to discuss key issues in international trade.
The application process follows a structured timeline, with submissions closing on May 1, 2026, at 23:59 CET. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed later that month, with the programme officially commencing on July 1, 2026. Throughout the year, participants will be involved in a range of activities, including training sessions, outreach programmes, and international engagements.
As the primary international body regulating trade between nations, the WTO plays a crucial role in ensuring that global trade flows smoothly, predictably, and fairly. It also provides a platform for negotiations, resolves trade disputes, and promotes transparency and cooperation among member states. Through initiatives like the Young Trade Leaders Programme, the organisation is investing in the next generation of leaders who will shape the future of global trade.
For young professionals seeking to expand their knowledge, build international networks, and contribute to meaningful global discussions, the programme offers a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in international economic governance while championing inclusive and sustainable trade practices.
