The African Scholarship Programme provides early-career researchers across Africa with the opportunity to conduct research at the Nordic Africa Institute for two to three months. The programme supports scholars in advancing their projects while participating in the Institute’s active academic environment.
Applications for the 2027 cycle are now open, with a submission deadline of 6 April 2026. Interested candidates can apply online.
Eligibility
The programme accepts two groups of early-career researchers based in Africa:
- PhD students: Must be enrolled in a doctoral program at an African university or research centre, employed full-time, and lack access to international PhD funding.
- Postdoctoral researchers: Must have completed their PhD within the last four years and hold a position at an African university or research centre.
Priority is given to research addressing gender issues, women’s social position, and topics aligned with the UN Agenda 2030.
Programme Benefits
Selected scholars receive:
- Economy-class return airfare
- Accommodation for the duration of the stay
- Daily allowance of 450 SEK (~50 USD)
- Installation grant of 2,500 SEK (~280 USD)
- Workspace with computer access
- Use of the Institute’s specialized library, Uppsala University Library, and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Library
The minimum stay is 60 days, with a maximum of 90. Applicants should note closures from June to August and mid-December to mid-January.
Programme Purpose
The scholarship strengthens Africa-focused research, promotes collaboration with Nordic institutions, facilitates knowledge exchange, expands research networks, and supports capacity building in social sciences and humanities.
Application Requirements include a CV, five-page research proposal, one-page work plan, and letters of support confirming enrollment or affiliation. Applications must be in English.
