In January 2012, Uganda’s Ministry of Health imposed a moratorium on new eHealth projects. The warning followed years of fragmented innovation: donors and NGOs had piloted up to 80 mHealth applications in Uganda in 2008, yet none achieved scale. The pilots were funded, but the resources needed for national rollout were missing.
The lesson is clear: proving an innovation works is only half the battle; scaling it is what creates lasting impact.
£150,000 in Catalytic Funding to Scale Impact
The 100x Impact Accelerator, based at the London School of Economics, targets ventures ready to move beyond proof of concept and reach hundreds of millions of people.
Selected ventures receive £150,000 in catalytic grant funding alongside a 16-week accelerator programme focused on scaling strategy and impact measurement.
Its portfolio includes digital-impact ventures such as Intelehealth, whose support I can personally vouch for, as well as Adalat AI, Darsel, Wysa and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible ventures must meet the programme’s requirements, including:
- Global reach: For-profit and non-profit ventures registered or operating anywhere in the world.
- Relevant impact: Work in one of 100x’s eight impact areas, spanning health and social care, democracy and other critical development challenges.
- Evidence of impact: A track record of adoption and validated outcomes.
- A credible scaling pathway: A model with the potential to reach hundreds of millions of people.
The accelerator aims to source 70% of its portfolio from emerging markets and favours founders based where their ventures operate.
