African Startup Funding Tightens as £85,000 Africa Prize Opens

African startups attracted approximately $1.44 billion in funding during the first half of 2026, but securing early-stage capital is becoming increasingly difficult. Small investment rounds are rapidly declining, with deals worth less than $500,000 accounting for only 19% of transactions, compared with 52% during the same period in 2021.

Just 190 startups raised more than $100,000 in the first six months of the year, marking the lowest figure recorded since at least 2021. With grants and other non-dilutive funding also becoming harder to secure, entrepreneurs may need to explore every available source of equity-free capital.

£85,000 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation

The Royal Academy of Engineering has opened applications for the 2027 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, offering a total prize fund of £85,000 to African innovators.

Supported by the UK International Science Partnerships Fund and private donors, the programme has supported more than 180 businesses across 24 African countries since it was launched in 2014.

Sixteen shortlisted innovators will participate in an eight-month programme running from February to November 2027. Participants will receive tailored business training, financial modelling support, engineering mentorship, communications assistance and in-person training. They will also have an opportunity to present their businesses at a major showcase event in an African city.

The overall winner will receive £50,000, while three runners-up will each receive £10,000. An additional £5,000 will be awarded through an audience vote.

The funding comes with no equity requirement, meaning successful applicants retain ownership of their businesses and intellectual property. Prize money must, however, be used to help scale the business.

To qualify, an innovation must be based in sub-Saharan Africa, have progressed beyond the idea stage and have a prototype or minimum viable product demonstrating customer traction. Eligible fields include ICT, computer science, agri-tech, biotechnology and medical engineering. Applicants do not need to hold engineering degrees.

Applicants should also take note of the programme’s AI policy. The use of generative AI in application writing must be disclosed, while AI-generated products, prototypes or enhanced images can result in disqualification.
