The global market for artificial intelligence in government is rapidly expanding, but many developing countries are yet to tap into its potential. A new initiative by Google aims to change that through a major funding program designed to accelerate the use of AI in public services.
According to recent global estimates, the market for artificial intelligence in government is projected to grow from about $22 billion to nearly $100 billion by 2033. Despite this rapid expansion, a recent assessment by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development found that around 75% of surveyed Southeast Asian countries currently have no government AI use cases.
Experts argue that wider adoption of AI in the public sector could significantly improve economic performance. Studies indicate that large-scale implementation of AI could reduce federal deficits by up to 22% and increase GDP by as much as 4% in developing economies.
To help bridge the gap, Google has launched the Impact Challenge: AI for Government Innovation, committing $30 million to support projects that use generative and agentic AI to transform public service delivery.
Through the initiative, selected organizations will receive up to $3 million in funding, along with participation in a multi-month accelerator program run by Google.org. Participants will also gain access to technical support from Google AI specialists, training on responsible AI governance, and cloud credits for tools such as Vertex AI and Gemini.
The program will prioritize projects in three key sectors:
- Health: Using AI to strengthen public health systems through tools like AI-powered triage and digital support for frontline health workers.
- Resilience: Supporting disaster preparedness and response through forecasting systems and real-time crisis management tools.
- Economy: Improving infrastructure and affordability by optimizing transport networks and public resource allocation.
Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and social enterprises with a strong social impact mission. Each applicant must partner with a government entity.
