OpenAI Preparing to Introduce Ads in ChatGPT, New Android Beta Reveals

OpenAI appears to be gearing up for the introduction of Ads in ChatGPT, according to new code discovered in the latest ChatGPT Android beta app.

Tech outlets have reported that the update, version 1.2025.329, contains references to an upcoming “Ads feature,” including strings labeled “search Ad,” “search Ads carousel,” and “bazaar content.” These clues strongly indicate that OpenAI is actively testing Ad placements inside the App.

The new references were not present in earlier versions, showing that Ads are moving from early ideas to real development. Since launching ChatGPT in 2022, OpenAI has relied on paid subscriptions and API usage fees, but operating large AI models remains extremely expensive. Ads would provide a new revenue stream without limiting access for free users.

Based on the leaked strings, Ads are likely to appear in specific search-style responses rather than normal conversations. This means users may see Ads when asking ChatGPT for product recommendations, comparisons, shopping queries, or travel suggestions. The mention of “bazaar content” suggests marketplace-style product cards or shopping carousels similar to Google or Amazon.

This move follows a growing trend in the AI industry. Google has started displaying Ads in AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot shows sponsored results in certain queries, and Perplexity AI includes sponsored suggestions. As chatbots increasingly act like search engines, integrating Ads is becoming the new industry standard.

Although OpenAI has not officially confirmed the rollout, the Android beta leak offers the clearest proof yet that advertising is coming to ChatGPT. If implemented carefully, Ads could help OpenAI support free users while expanding its business model – marking a major shift in how AI assistants are monetized.
